Journal Pages I

Description

This is just a page from my journal/sketchbook...it's not pre-planned, you'll note the wonky calligraphy!

It's an extract from the journal of a lady of the Japanese court -Sei Shonagon, written ten centuries ago, in the form of a diary that was kept in the wooden pillow ladies slept on to preserve their elaborate head-dresses...it is full of lists, gossip & beautiful poetry...
*I'm just sharing this with you all because I usually take at least one of my sketchbooks to work on when I'm helping at my local museum...so people from all around the world have handled this sketchbook, so I thought I would shareit with you guys too!

[Dip pen, Indian ink, pencil/coloured pencil]

For those who can't read my rough calligraphy (I'll post some of my finished works soon!)

"I will make you a list of elegant things...

*Duck eggs
*Shaved ice in a silver bowl
*Wisteria blossom
*Plum blossom covered in snow
*A child eating strawberries"[Section 029]

Oh! This is lovely - Lady Shonagon would be proud!
I love that book, and I think that what you call "wonkiness" just makes these journal pages more beautiful because to me it helps reveal the personable warmth that runs throughout the book.
By the way - I hope you can forgive me, I have been meaning to write back to your comments for sometime now (but in-between work and shoddy internet connections it got a little beyond me :) ) Your thoughts and comments couldn't have come at a better time! Thank you :floating:
Not only that, because I'm presently living in the sweaty humid hub that is Bangkok I really appreciate 'meeting' fellow illustrators (not that I'm quite confident enough to name myself that aloud) and especially a fellow Aussie!
And although the BKK art scene has DEFinitley gotten more vibrant over the last few years I will admit that your attendance at the Shag exhibition has made me extremely jealous and (dare I say it???.....) a little homesick :D
I'm looking forward to your next deviations!
